Chickoo Halwa (Sapodilla Pudding)

Chickoo is a tropical fruit known as Sapodilla in Mexico and Central America. When ripe the fruit is sweet as brown sugar. This recipe calls for khoya, made from boiling milk until it thickens. For this recipe you can substitute condensed milk.

Ingredients

6 chickoos (Sapodilla fruit)
3 oz. milk
1/4 cup sugar
5 oz. khoya (or substitute condensed milk)
1 tbsp ghee
Shelled walnuts, for garnish

Directions

  1. Peel and mash the chickoos.
  2. Combine chickoo and milk in a saucepan and bring to a boil, stirring constantly.
  3. When slightly thick add khoya and lower heat to simmer for 20 minutes, stirring continuously.
  4. Add sugar and ghee and simmer for an additional 4 or 5 minutes.
  5. Remove to a plate, cut into squares, and garnish with half walnut.
