Tur Dal Kofta (Yellow Lentil Patties)

These vegetarian patties are made with lentils and make a great snack or a meal served with rice.

Ingredients

2 cups toor dal (yellow lentil)
6 green chilies, chopped
3 tbsp. finely chopped coriander leaves (cilantro)
3 tbsp. grated coconut
3 tbsp. whole cumin seeds
1 pinch asafetida
Salt to taste

Directions

  1. Soak the lentils in water overnight to soften.
  2. Drain and rinse the lentils then grind, coarsely, in a food processor.
  3. Combine lentils with the chilies, coriander, coconut, cumin seeds and asafetida. Mix well.
  4. Add salt to taste.
  5. Roll mixture into small balls (about 1 to 1.5 inches) and cook in pressure cooker set at high for 15 minutes.
  6. If you don’t have a pressure cooker, place koftas on a greased cookie sheet and bake at 350 F for 20 minutes.
