This goes well as a side dish with chapattis or rice and can be eaten hot or cold. Servings vary based on size.

Ingredients
1 tbsp. sesame seeds
1 tbsp. urad dhal (black lentil)
1 tbsp. channa dhal (yellow split pea)
3 red chilies
1/4 tsp asafoetida (hing)
2 green chilies
1 tsp chickpeas
1/2 tsp tamarind paste
1 tbsp. jaggery (substitute brown sugar)
1/2 cup grated coconut
5 tbsp. vegetable oil, for frying
1 tsp. mustard seeds
1/4 tsp turmeric
1 can (small) crushed pineapple (about 1 cup)
Salt, to taste
Directions
- In a dry skillet, fry the sesame seeds, dhals, red chilies and
- asafoetida for 5 minutes.
- Combine the fried ingredients with the green chilies, chickpeas, tamarind
- paste, jaggery. and grated coconut in a food processor and grind to a fine paste. Add small amounts of water as required to maintain smoothness. Set masala paste aside.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and turmeric and continue heating until mustard seeds begin to pop and crackle.
- Add crushed pineapple, and continue cooking for 15 minutes.
- Add the masala paste and continue cooking for 10 minutes.
- Add salt, to taste.
- Serve hot or cold.
